One important roof component often forgotten about is INSULATION.  A well-insulated attic can significantly reduce your energy costs.  In fact, by insulating your attic adequately, you can save up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs.*

According to the International Energy Conservation Code, 55% of attics in existing homes in the US are under insulated.  Some problems commonly associated with having an under insulated attic include:

  1. Air conditioners working harder to keep warm houses cooler in the summer months
  2. Heat loss in colder months
  3. Increased chance the ice dams develop in the winter, possibly causing water leakage inside your home

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently released a new R-value recommendation for new and existing homes in this area of the country being R-60.  The R-value means resistance to heat flow.  The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.  The most cost-effective way to enhance energy efficiency is to insulate the attic.

Owens_Corning_logo.jpgWe use Owens Corning AttiCat® Blown-In PINK FiberglasTM Insulation.  Unlike other loosefill insulations, it will not settle or deteriorate with age, so there is no danger of losing R-value over time.  It is also:

  • Non-Corrosive  --  doesn't require fire-retardant chemicals which can leach out, promoting corrosion of pipes, electircal equipment or structural metal attachments.
  • Non-Combustible --  meets all model building codes for non-combustibility.
  • Won't Absorb Moisture -- Moisture reduces insulation effectiveness.  Glass fibers resist moisture build-up.
  • Doesn't Support Mold Growth --  Inorganic glass fibers do not support fungus or mold growth.  Will not rot or decay.

The cost to insulate your attic properly is relatively low, and can be completed in just one day.
